Morning Tai Chi at the Temple of Heaven

At 6:30 AM, hundreds already gathered under the cypress trees of the Temple of Heaven. Australian traveler Sarah followed Auntie Li in red silk, attempting the "cloud hands" Tai Chi move. Local morning exercisers gently corrected her posture. "They don’t speak English, but smiles are universal," Sarah wrote in her journal.

The self-service ticket machine at the gate had an English interface—she easily purchased a 35-yuan ticket with her credit card. At the Echo Wall, she met German backpackers testing the acoustics with their phones, their laughter startling pigeons on the eaves. As morning dew still glistened on the blue tiles of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Sarah sipped fresh soy milk (6 yuan) while watching elders write Chinese characters with water calligraphy brushes. "This feels more alive than any museum," she filmed for her family. "Beijing’s daily life is the culture."
